About Our Founder

Edward J. Imperatore
In 1946, at just 24 years old, Edward Imperatore founded Imperatore Steel with little more than grit, vision, and a single crane he purchased while serving in the U.S. Navy at Quonset Point.
The son of Italian immigrants and the third youngest of ten children, Ed’s early life shaped his sense of independence and resilience. He forged his own path—often reaching life’s milestones alone — fueled by a strong work ethic and unwavering determination. He approached every challenge with courage and a will to succeed, including teaching himself to operate and repair complex equipment with no formal training.
From these humble beginnings, Ed, together with his older brother Raymond, built Imperatore Steel into a thriving enterprise, eventually bringing other family members into the business. It was never just a company—it was a family.
At the heart of Ed’s legacy was his extraordinary work ethic and profound appreciation for his employees, earning loyalty that spanned decades. Many of his steelworkers—his “men,” as he proudly called them—devoted more than 25 years to the company, a lasting testament to the culture he created.
A dedicated and proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 57 for over 50 years, Ed demanded the highest standards for quality, craftsmanship, precision, and above all, safety on every job site.
Ed was equally defined by his generosity. He frequently helped those in need, often taking on extra work to support relatives, friends, and even strangers — expecting nothing in return. His charitable work also reached far beyond the business, leaving a lasting impact on communities throughout Rhode Island.
Those who knew Ed remember not only his professional accomplishments, but also his presence—his charisma, his competitive spirit, as well as his undeniable and infectious sense of humor. Yet many also admired, and even appreciated, his unapologetic authenticity — a reflection of the strength and resolve with which he met every challenge … never backing down and always inspiring others to rise alongside him.
Edward Imperatore’s vision and leadership laid the foundation for what Imperatore Corporation is today—a company distinguished in its industry. Yet his greatest legacy lives on in the people he influenced: his family, his employees, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In 2016, we said goodbye to Ed. With that farewell came profound gratitude for a life defined by strength, a true generosity of spirit, and unwavering determination. He is deeply missed, and his impact will endure for generations.
